You’ve been considering it for a while. You’ve worked hard to get the figure you desperately want, but you’re not there yet. Oh – you’ve lost the weight, but there’re still rolls of stubborn fat that persist in that certain spot. During the warmer months, your summer clothes told the story. You should have shown off your body – Instead, you felt you had to cover it. Now that it’s autumn, it’s time to do something about it.
Aesthetic surgery like all surgeries requires recovery. Liposuction is no different, and the best time to recover is in the fall, when the temperatures are lower, and your clothing is less revealing. Also, cooler temperatures encourage comfort and minimal swelling during the healing process.
Friends are less likely to notice any changes during this time because fall functions are fewer as everyone gears up for the upcoming holidays. And speaking of the holiday season, you want your body to stunningly display the new fall fashions and be the envy at every party you attend. And when next summer rolls around, you can wear what you want without fear of embarrassment.
What Are Your Options?
Liposuction is a cosmetic procedure which removes stubborn fat immune to diet and exercise. It can be used as a standalone body contouring procedure or used with other procedures like a tummy tuck, breast surgery, or a facelift. Over the years, liposuction has evolved into a customized procedure. With multiple techniques, Dr. Fasching can tailor liposuction to your individual need and desired outcome.
Traditional liposuction has been around for decades. Through a tiny incision, Dr. Fasching will insert a narrow tube (cannula) to remove fat deposits which lie beneath the skin. The cannula is manipulated back and forth through the fat layer to break up the fat cells and vacuum them out. One section or multiple sections of the body can be treated reducing inches and providing your desired shape in each area.
Dr. Fasching may also inject a medicated solution into the fat pads before removal. This fluid is a mixture epinephrine (contains blood vessels), lidocaine (anesthetic), and saline (salt solution) which aids in fat cell removal by reducing blood loss and numbing the treatment area during surgery and afterward.
Tumescent liposuction is injecting a large amount of fluid into the treatment area. Sometimes the amount of fluid is three times as much as the fat to be removed. This technique requires only a local anesthetic which reduces much of the risk with surgery. The procedure takes longer, but because of the anesthetic in the fluid, additional anesthesia is rarely necessary.
Similarly, the super-wet technique uses fluid, just not as much. The amount injected is about equal to the amount of fat to be removed. This technique requires general anesthesia or an IV sedation. The procedure takes about an hour or two.
Ultrasound-Assisted Lipoplasty (UAL)
Dr. Fasching will use a special cannula which produces ultrasonic energy during this technique. As this energy passes through the unwanted fat pad, it ruptures the fat cell walls resulting in the fat liquefying. Then the fat is removed in the same manner as traditional liposuction.
The UAL technique improves the effectiveness and the precision of liposuction in tough areas like the upper back and on the side of the breast. Dr. Fasching also uses UAL as a secondary procedure to complement other treatments because of its precision. Typically, UAL takes longer to perform than traditional liposuction, but is highly effective, especially with the more tedious treatment areas.
As mentioned earlier, fall is the best time to take it easy and recover from liposuction surgery. You will be expected to wear a surgical garment for a few weeks after your procedure, hence, the optimal time for more clothing. Although you will not feel like running a marathon after the procedure, you will continue to feel better as the days and weeks pass.
Your results will begin to come into full view after about a week, with full recovery realized after a month to six weeks. The best thing about the recovery is you will experience a gradual improvement, leading to a holiday season to remember.
